Meet the Students

Fukushima National College of Technology

I have never enjoyed studying English because we just remember English words and grammar at school. Now in the Ashita-Tomorrow Skype Sessions, I have opportunities to use the English expressions I learnt. I’m motivated to study English more. (A.H.)

I find speaking in English with foreigners in the Skype Sessions so much fun. I always wanted to be a good English speaker but I had very little chances to speak English. I’m glad to participate in the Session. Thank you.(K.H.)

I learned in the Skype Sessions that your attitude and willingness to talk with people is much more important than English grammar. When you really want to tell something to your partners, they would listen to you. It’s just the same as in Japanese. I also found simple/basic English expressions I had learned at junior high schools are more helpful than the difficult English syntax we’re studying now. I love discussing different topics every week. I’d like to learn expressions my American partners use in their daily lives as well as to develop my listening comprehension skills. (R.S.)

I realized how my English was poor when I joined the Skype Sessions. Now I love it when my American partner understands me (sometimes I just enumerate English words, though) and we have conversations! We talk about books and movies. I am now trying to study English harder so that I can tell the American friend about my feelings and thoughts. Each session is a precious experience for me. (A.S.)

When I started the Skype Sessions, I was at a loss because I could not express my feelings. After a while, because of my partner’s willingness to understand me, I lose an inhibition and talk freely. Each week I decide to tell my partner what happened in the previous week and think how to express it. It is also interesting to learn about American college life and different culture. (F.S.)

I was reminded how difficult to talk with native English speakers more than I had thought it would be. For example, I’m familiar with one English word, but I am unable to hear (understand) during the Skype Sessions. I realize that I have to have much more exposure to English. It is such a pleasure, though, when I can express what I want to tell my friend with little troubles. Repeating failure/success in communications may develop my English language skills.(N.F.)

I pay more attention to English after I started talking with American friends. And the conversation with them gives me broader views. (A.S.)

I have enjoyed the Skype Sessions since I0th grade. I love speaking English and I just love talking with American students. They are all interested in Japan. We tell each other about our cultures, customs, daily lives and popular movies and music, etc. I believe I understand America better than before. I sometime get frustrated when I can’t get myself understood well, still the Sessions train me to be a better English speaker. (K.S.)

I strongly hope to acquire a good command of spoken English and to get to know many people through English. (M.O.)

This is my first experience in seriously speaking in English on the Skype. I was too nervous to speak what I wanted to say, but now I enjoy the Sessions. They also make me realize I need to study English harder. (M.S.)

First, I was so embarrassed that I did not know what and how to talk with American students. This embarrassment motivates me to study English more seriously. I now look forward to the next Skype Session every week!(M.M.)

I started to enjoy taking with American students in English. Now English is for the real world, not merely studying in the classrooms.(M.A.)

English is never my strong point. I felt I should do something to change my attitude toward English, thus I joined the Skype Sessions. My classmates and American volunteers encourage me so I start enjoying studying English. (R.S.)

A friend of mine asked me to join the Session together. I was too frightened in the beginning. Now I fell happy when our American volunteer understands what I want to say.(S.O.)

It is my first time to talk with an English native speaker for a substantial period of time. I use a lot of gesture because my English skill is very limited. Still it is fun when the American student understand me.(A.O.)
